The debate of waiting until you have a problem or fixing it before it becomes a problem is a big debate on so many topics. Generally, I can be swayed either way especially when it comes to products. But when it comes to your health and in this case dental hygiene I think that being preventative not only is safer but saves you money as well. The saving of money is a huge benefit when it comes to dental issues because they can be rather expensive in the long run. I am almost certain that the cost of being preventative on your dental health can save lots of moeny and lots of pain. So let's go over why that maybe and see if I cannot convince you on the answer.
I like to think of staying healthy as a task. It is a taks to constantly be better and feel better as well. The ability to stay ahead of medical issues is a smart move in that the cost of not having medical emergiencies is more than the cost of preventative measures. I like to break it down into catagories as to not be silly and make wild accusations. I think that I use 1 tube of toothpaste per month. That comes out to about 3 dollars a month and 36 to 40 dollars with taxes each year. That is the cost for me to brush my teeth three times a day for 365 days a year. The extra cost of mouthwash and dental floss doubles that cost. This means I could be around 80 to 100 dollars a year in the cost of my dentla health when I add in the cost of 1 brush a year. Now, if that was all I did and was consistent with my habits, most dentists would say I would not have any issues. As long as my diet was well taken care of and I didn't eat poorly I may never have a dental issue.
Now I would say preventative only works if you know you are not having issues. So I have to add in two dental visits per year to see if my teeth are staying healthy. With my insurance, I would say this is about 100 dollars a year. Now I am up to 200 dollars in healthcare costs to be preventative. The reality is that the cost of most surguries is 1000-5000 dollars in the dental realm. I am fully confident that most people have a dental issue every three to five years. This is if they are not taking precausionts and keeping up with their teeth. The costs show that preventative measures is less than actually going in for emergencies. That is not taking into account the reality that it is also less paintful to stay ahead of your dental emergeincies.
Pain is a real cost and many people would pay almost anything for it to go away. To me, it is absolutly worth it to preventativly pay 200 a year to not feel a route canal or have a filling due to the immence pain my teeth are giving me. But it just depends on how you feel about the situation and in some cases what available funds you have to use on your health. Hope these tips help.
